How Toolula works: local-first tools in your browser
Toolula is a suite of document, image, media and finance utilities that all share one architectural rule: your files are processed on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued on a server, and no account is required. Here is what that means technically.
WebAssembly does the heavy lifting
PDF merging and compression, OCR text recognition, image conversion and audio or video transcoding are all performed by WebAssembly modules loaded into the page. Once the module is in memory, it operates on the bytes of the file you selected using your own processor. Large jobs are split into chunks and run inside Web Workers, so a 300-page PDF or a long video render will not lock up the tab while it works.
- PDF, image, OCR and media engines compiled to WebAssembly
- Multi-threaded Web Workers for large batch jobs
- Files are read through the browser File API, never uploaded
No accounts, no storage, no tracking of file contents
Because processing is local, there is no server that ever sees your document. Preferences such as theme, language and tool presets live in LocalStorage on your device. There are no file retention windows to worry about, no expiring download links and no cleanup jobs, because a copy of your file never existed anywhere but in your own RAM.
- No sign-up, no email address, no file size gate
- Settings stored locally and cleared with your browser data
- Tools keep working after the network is disconnected
One ecosystem, connected workflows
The tools are designed to hand off to each other: scan a document to PDF, run OCR to make it searchable, redact sensitive lines, then generate a compliant invoice from the extracted figures. Because each step is local, chaining them does not multiply your exposure the way uploading to four different online services would.
- PDF, image, OCR, text, developer, QR, media and finance tools
- Consistent two-column studio interface across the suite
- Free to use with no per-file or per-day limits
Veelgestelde vragen
Is Toolula gratis?
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Every tool reads your file through the browser's File API and processes it in memory on your device. You can confirm this by disconnecting from the network after the page has loaded — the tools continue to work normally.
Is there a file size or daily usage limit?
There is no artificial limit. The practical ceiling is your device's available memory: very large PDFs or long video files need more RAM, and a phone will handle less than a desktop. If a job fails on a huge file, splitting it into parts usually resolves it.
Which browsers are supported?
Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on desktop or mobile. Some advanced media features rely on WebCodecs and multi-threaded WebAssembly, which are best supported in Chromium-based browsers.
Can I use the output commercially?
Yes. Files you create — PDFs, invoices, images, QR codes, exports — are yours to use without attribution or licensing conditions.
