Removed, Not Painted Over
Many redaction tools only draw a black box, and the text underneath can still be copied out. Toolula deletes the characters under each box from the PDF's text layer, overwrites image pixels beneath it and verifies the result before you download.
Validated Detectors, Your Own Terms
IBANs are checked by country length and mod-97, card numbers by Luhn and the German Steuer-ID by its check digit, so a one-click scan is precise. Add words or regular expressions, and black out whole statement rows in one go.

Frequently asked questions
Can the redacted text be recovered?
No. The characters are deleted from the content stream rather than covered, earlier revisions and orphaned objects are purged, and Toolula re-reads the exported file to confirm no text remains under any box. A page whose content can't be cut out safely is flattened to an image instead.
Which kinds of personal data does it find?
IBANs from every SEPA country and beyond, BIC/SWIFT codes, German tax numbers (Steuernummer) and tax IDs (Steuer-ID), EU VAT IDs, email addresses, phone numbers, payment card numbers, and optionally amounts and dates. You can add any word or regular expression.
Does it work on scanned documents?
Detection needs a text layer, so run Scan to Searchable PDF first or draw boxes by hand. Image pixels under every box are overwritten either way.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. Toolula processes the document inside your browser tab with pdf-lib and WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your device.
