Blur background

Drop a photo and an AI model in your browser finds the subject, keeps it sharp and softens everything behind it like a fast portrait lens.

About this tool

Portrait-Mode Blur for Any Photo, Without Uploading It

Works on people, pets, products and cars, with the blur strength and the edge under your control.

No Halo Around the Subject

Before blurring, the subject is painted out of the background and filled from the scene around it, so its colours can't bleed into the blur as a glowing outline.

Strength You Choose

From a slight softening that just separates the subject to a strong bokeh, with the same look in the preview and in the saved file at full size.

Clean Edges

Feather the edge for a natural transition or pull it in a little, and touch up hair or gaps with the brush in the cut-out step.

How to use it

  1. Drop a photo, or paste it with Ctrl + V. The subject is found automatically.
  2. Set the blur strength.
  3. Adjust the edge if needed, or switch to a colour, gradient or photo instead.
  4. Choose PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF and click Save image.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Every image is decoded, processed and encoded inside your browser tab with Canvas, Web Workers and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.

Does it work on photos without people?

Yes. The default model finds any clear subject, such as a pet, a product, food or a car, and blurs what is behind it.

Why is there no glow around the subject?

A plain blur mixes the subject's colours into the background next to it. Here the subject is removed from the background first and the gap filled from its surroundings, so the blur only uses background colours.

Is the saved photo as large as the original?

Yes, up to 4096 px on the long side (2560 px on phones). The preview is smaller, but it is drawn with the same settings, so it matches the file.

Why does the first run take longer?

The first run downloads the AI model once (about 80 MB). Your browser caches it, so later images start right away and the tool also works offline.

Is it free, and is there a watermark?

Yes, it is free to use without an account, and Toolula never adds a watermark. The free plan has fair-use limits; Toolula Pro, an optional plan, raises them.
