Extend image

Drop a photo, pick a new aspect ratio or drag its edges, and fill the extra space with matching texture from the picture — without cropping a pixel.

About this tool

Extend Photos to Any Aspect Ratio in Your Browser

Turn a landscape shot into a square post or a 9:16 story without cutting anything off. The tool enlarges the canvas and fills the new area on your device.

Four Ways to Fill

Content-aware fill copies matching texture from your photo, so skies, grass, walls and plain backgrounds simply carry on. Blurred edge stretches the outer pixels into a soft backdrop, Mirror reflects the photo, and Colour adds a solid or transparent border.

Any Size, Any Direction

One click for 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9, an exact size in pixels, or drag each edge of the preview. Choose where the photo sits and add extra space all round.

Your Photo Stays Untouched

Only the new border is generated; the original pixels are kept exactly. Don't like a fill? Try another one with a single click, then save as PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF.

How to use it

  1. Drop, paste or choose a photo (PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC and more).
  2. Pick 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9 or Custom — or drag the edges of the preview.
  3. Choose a fill: Content-aware, Blurred edge, Mirror or Colour. Click Try another fill for a different result.
  4. Choose a format and download the extended image.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Every image is decoded, processed and encoded inside your browser tab with Canvas, Web Workers and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.

Is this generative AI outpainting?

No. Content-aware fill is a classic patch-based method: it repeats texture that is already in your photo. It works best for skies, landscapes, walls, studio and product backgrounds; it can't invent new objects such as a missing arm or a second building.

Which fill should I use?

Content-aware for natural backgrounds, Blurred edge for busy photos you want on a soft backdrop (popular for 9:16 stories), Mirror for symmetric patterns, and Colour or Transparent when the border should be plain.

Is there a size limit?

The new canvas can be up to four times the photo's width and height. Very large results are saved at up to 16 megapixels (8 on phones and tablets with little memory) so the browser doesn't run out of memory.

Is it free, and is there a watermark?

Yes, it is free to use without an account, and Toolula never adds a watermark. The free plan has fair-use limits; Toolula Pro, an optional plan, raises them.
