Compress GIF
Drop a GIF and watch the compressed version play next to the original, with both file sizes — adjust lossy level, colours, frames and size until it fits.
About this tool
Smaller GIFs Without Guesswork
For chat apps, emails, docs and websites with upload limits — compressed on your device in seconds.
Four Ways to Shrink
Lossy compression accepts tiny colour changes for long runs that compress well, the colour count trims the palette, dropping every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame keeps the timing, and scaling reduces the pixel count.
Steady, Clean Frames
One shared palette with ordered dithering keeps colours from flickering, and only the part of each frame that changed is stored — the same encoder Toolula Video uses for its GIFs.
See the Result as You Go
The compressed GIF plays live beside the original with its exact size. Leave out single frames from the strip, or save as animated WebP, which is often far smaller.
How to use it
- Drop a GIF (or an animated WebP / APNG).
- Move the Lossy and Colours sliders, remove frames or reduce the size.
- Compare the preview and the file size with the original.
- Download the smaller GIF.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Toolula reads, edits and saves the animation inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
How much smaller will my GIF get?
Typically 30–70 %. Lossy 30–50 with 128 colours is a good start; removing every 2nd frame roughly halves the file again. Screen recordings and flat graphics shrink the most, noisy video clips the least.
Will the animation get faster when I remove frames?
No. The time of each removed frame is added to the frame before it, so the GIF plays at the same speed — just a little less smoothly.
Is there a size limit?
Animations are held in memory while you edit them. Very long or large animations are loaded at a smaller size (and, on phones, only as many frames as fit), and the tool tells you when that happens.
Is it free?
Yes — no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
