Compress PDF

Shrink file size while keeping quality.

About this tool

Compress PDF to a Size — 1 MB, 2 MB or Any Limit

Enter the maximum file size an upload portal or email allows and get the best-looking PDF that fits. Everything runs locally in your browser — no upload, no sign-up, no watermark and no file size limit.

You Set the Limit

Type 0.5, 1 or 2 MB — Toolula searches for the highest quality that still stays under it instead of making you guess a compression level.

No Quality Lost When Not Needed

If a clean rebuild already fits, the pages are left untouched. Only files that are still too big are re-rendered at lower resolution.

Still Too Big? Split It

When even the strongest setting cannot reach the limit, split the result into parts that each fit with one click.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF. The tool opens on To a size.
  2. Type the maximum size in MB that the portal or email allows, for example 1, 2 or 0.5. A comma works as a decimal separator too.
  3. Click Compress to size. Toolula first tries a lossless rebuild, then searches for the highest quality that still fits.
  4. Read the result: it says whether the file fits without losing quality, fits under your limit, or how small it could get.
  5. Download the PDF. If it is still too large, click Split into parts to get several files that each stay under the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. Toolula processes the document inside your browser tab with pdf-lib and WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your device.

Is the text still selectable after compressing?

Only if the file fits without re-rendering. Otherwise pages are turned into images, so text is no longer selectable; keep the original for copying text.

What if my PDF is already under the limit?

Then nothing is changed and you get the file back exactly as it was, so there is no reason to fear a quality loss from trying.

Is it really free?

Yes. You can use every Toolula PDF tool for free, without an account. The free plan has fair-use limits; Toolula Pro, an optional plan, raises them and adds advanced features.
